4 Tips for Curling Hair to Get Long Lasting Results
Have you ever take the time to curl your hair only for the curls to fall out within an hour or two?? Here’s 4 tips to get your curls to last longer
#1 Prepping the hair with proper products
• Products used should be based on hair texture, for example straight fine hair tends to need some extra help when it comes to holding curls. I personally have this hair texture and have found that adding a strong hold mousse or texture spray after washing my hair does the trick. (*Pro tip, when planning to curl your hair, skip the conditioner when washing your hair. Conditioner adds softness to the hair which doesn't give much for the curls to hold on to.)
• With thick coarse hair, I suggest products that are more light. With thickness comes weight and if you add heavy products on to heavy hair the curls will have a hard time holding for you. If you have thick, heavy hair, I highly suggest getting your hair thinned out. It's a super easy way to lighten up the hair without losing length or adding layers. Next time you go in for a haircut talk to your stylist about thinning it out
*note you should always apply a heat protectant and allow it to dry completely before applying any type of heat to your hair.
#2 Determine the proper size curling iron
• This one is super important! Curling irons come in a variety of barrel sizes that achieve different types of curls. Bigger barrels give you looser curls that, without the proper styling products, will potentially fall out faster. On the contrary, smaller barrels will give you a tighter curl that will last longer, however, with smaller barrels you have to take smaller sections which takes more time (your section should be the same width of whatever size barrel you are using). I suggest sticking with a barrel size that is between 1" to 1 ½"
#3 Proper temperature and timing
• Like I stated earlier, you should always apply a heat protectant before applying heat to the hair. Generally you want to keep the temperature setting as low as possible, but keep in mind that the lower the heat the longer you will have to hold the hair on the iron.
After releasing the hair try holding it in your palm and letting it cool. It’s not about how the hair is when it’s heated, but instead when is cools back down.
#4 hairspray hairspray hairspray!!!
I know some people are not a fan of the feeling hairsprays gives your hair, but if your hair doesn’t hold curl it’s super important! Remember to his the can at least 6 inches away from you head. This will help to coat the hair evenly. For loser waves, allow your curls to cool for a few minutes and then comb through with a wide tooth comb. Finish off with a little more hairspray and you’re good to go!
