Silent Hair Appointments- Will My Stylist Be Offended?
Hey I’m Morgan, I have been a stylist for 10 years and working at Expressions for 2.5 years, and if there is one vibe I can pick up on is that not everyone wants to chit chat during their service(s)…
If you're sitting here wondering whether or not a 'silent hair appointment' is going to somehow "upset" or "offend" your stylist, look no further! Silent hair appointments are totally a thing!
As I sit here and write about this, I've been on both sides of this POV. I've been the client who maybe wasn't feeling like talking or not even being in the mood to talk. I've also been the stylist who more than likely felt the same way you, as the client, feels. And I can feel for you, as the client, who thinks "OMG my stylist is totally gonna be offended" or "ugh hope they're not offended, its not them i'm just in a bad mood." I hope that you have the courage to tell your stylist that (maybe not this time) you're not feeling the vibe of talking! I know it can be scary or nerve wracking asking for what you want (and not just with your hair) but I can promise you they will appreciate it! Today's blog I will be focusing more on the stylist POV; a peek into my thoughts :)
As a stylist with ten years under my belt, I can 1000% say I will NEVER be upset or offended if you don't wanna talk during your hair visit(s). I see so many clients in a week, sometimes let alone a day, and after talking about everything and anything with my wonderful clients; it's been one long day/week. Usually at 9.5/10 I can read the room and my chair pretty well to realize that my client(s) just dont wanna talk.....and that's 5/5 stars OK. Perhaps you're in a slump kind of mood, the vibe isn't there today, ADHD, maybe your animals got loose, or you're grieving. Whatever it may be just know that while you think I'm gonna be offended as to why you dont wanna talk, I'll be over here wondering when my lunch break is. I will never be offended or upset and I will never ask you as to why we're having a Silent Hair Appointment.
Recently one of my clients asked me for a Silent Hair Appointment and I was more than welcome to accommodate them. I reassured them it was ok with me as long as I got to ask them five questions pertaining to their hair. I usually ask the most important five questions (in my opinion): bangs no bangs, trim or cut, layers and if so how short or long, low or high maintenance, are you a morning person. I figure those are pretty specific questions but vague enough that if my client uses their cool lingo I'll know immediately whether or not they want xyz. Five questions is just enough for me to know almost everything about their hair and nothing about them without talking further; contradicts the Silent Appointment purpose. So, while my client is dissociating (I do it too while blow drying don't worry) ... I'm also thanking you for having my back for arm day and leg day while I'm doing your hair! Thanks bestie! <3 Do you kinda see where I'm going with this?
While you think your stylist is gonna be "offended" or "upset" that you asked for a Silent Appointment, they're actually doing the complete opposite. They are proud you told us instead of pulling teeth to talk to you and it's very awkward.... AND they're (probably) relieved that they don't have to talk either! I love what I do, don't get me wrong but after talking and having a loooong day it's so nice to just kick back, be in the zone, be creative and help make you feel beautiful without saying a peep. The look on your face when you see your hair at the end makes the Silent Hair Appointment all the more better <3
*I just wanted to add this in here, if your stylist isn't welcoming with Silent Appointments chances are they're family or friends and that's a whole different can of worms LOL jk*
